"Participation, Consultation and Deliberation in the EU. Theoretical reflections and empirical evidence"
Introduction
Following the White Paper on Governance and the Plan D
for Democracy, Dialogue and Debate initiatives for involving citizens and
organised citizens in EU governance are flourishing. The EU Commission
introduced procedural innovations to
improve the transparency of lobbying activities, enhanced existing practices
for dialogue with experts and interest representatives, set principles and
standards for on-line and written consultations open to the general public and,
more recently, adventured with deliberative polls and consensus conferences to
address individual citizens. The
workshop aims at providing an overview of EU participatory engineering,
discussing current developments in the context of on-going transformations of
EU democratic governance.
