WP21 Objectives

Most doctoral students have little or no systematic training in third sector theories and approaches, and often find themselves isolated from current developments in the field. Moreover, because of their intellectual isolation from the larger field and from each other, PhD candidates may fail to benefit from the opportunities and intellectual enrichment a network of contacts among fellow scholars and students could provide. This initiative is addressing this situation and is putting in place a supportive PhD environment in the form of a network of institutions, researchers and students.

WP21 Description of Work

The core activity of the proposed initiative is to create a forum for Ph.D. students. Specifically, we bring together PhD students, starting at an early stage of their Ph.D. programme, working on voluntary or third sector and civil society issues once a year for a series of seminars and discussions. These events introduce students to theories and approaches in the field; discuss current and future research topics; allow students to present their own work to a group of peers; and allow students to benefit from the feedback of fellow students and the advice of a broad group of faculty.
