WP20 Objectives

Seminars will explore the salience of conceptions of social movements to the local, national and EU levels of civil society. Social movements are an important dimension of civil society and of citizenship. Theories of new social movements appeared as a response to new types of informal politics; particularly protest politics, and new identities that emerged from the late 1960s in much of the first world. These theories tend to proceed from two broad approaches. One approach has been to set up analytical categories for defining a social movement and then to test these out on empirical cases.

WP20 Description of Work

Key comparative issues are:

  • The emergence of a European social movement space connected to the anti-globalization movement.
  • The relationship between protest and social movements.
  • The relationship between social movements and local civic organisations (including service delivery).
  • The relationship between local organizations and global movements.
  • The way new forms of governance have affected the processes and forms of institutionalisation of social movements at the local/urban level.
  • Divergence of cultural and political dimensions of social movements.
  • Whether the rapid anti-war mobilization of March 2003 has had lasting effects on civil society in terms of new networks, identities and constituencies.
