WP12 Objectives
The aim of the work package is to investigate the academic and policy literature on the changing model of family and its consequences for citizenship rights and the development of social entitlements across Europe by focusing on the following subjects:
- The nature of the assumptions underpinning policies that exist regarding the contributions that men and women make and ought to make to families at the EU and member state levels, and, in particular, how far it is now assumed by policymakers that women are/should be ‘citizen workers’.
- The principles on which it is possible both to value (to recognize and materially reward) and to share care work (between the individual and the collective and between men and women), assessing, for example, the idea of an ethic of care and the possibilities of the capabilities approach in this regard
- The kind of policies that enable real freedom of choice between paid and unpaid work in different countries, including cash for care, care services, the regulation of working time, policies to ensure time to care, and work/life balance policies.
- The extent to which women exercise voice and over which kinds of policies, at the level of central government, local government and via civil society organizations.
- The kind of EU policies that influence the evolution of European citizenship within this specific area
