The Institute of International Relations and Political Science (IIRPS) of Vilnius University was established in 1992 by an agreement between Vilnius University and the Supreme Committee for the Liberation of Lithuania. Its aim is to provide high quality studies of political science and to conduct fundamental research that meets the needs of the State and society.
Initially a two-year programme in International Relations, the Institute is presently (2005) an academic unit of Vilnius University where political science studies are carried out on at Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D. levels and scientific research is conducted. It has become a prestigious institution of higher education in political science and international relations, whose alumni are typically employed as diplomats, civil servants, political commentators and journalists, they also teach at universities.
The IIRPS carries out training of professionals, civil servants and diplomats in political science, international relations and public administration studies; it develops and promotes knowledge in political science among specialists and the general public by organising public events and issuing publications. In co-operation with Lithuanian institutions and NGO’s, the IIRPS organises training courses, provides expertise for public institutions, organises public events, initiates the establishment of NGO’s, promotes the development of political culture and civil society in Lithuania, forms public opinion on the issues of domestic and foreign policy.
