University of Ljublana (FSS-UL-32)

The Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Social Sciences, Ljubljana, Slovenia

The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) has over 4,000 students and more than 20 undergraduate and graduate programmes in political science, sociology, communication, and cultural studies. The staff consists of 55 teachers, who are part-time researchers, and 56 full-time researchers.

The Faculty provides courses that aim at increasing intercultural understanding and international co-operation. Through teaching and research, national and international issues are addressed at a time when globalisation requires new perspectives and it is in this spirit that the Institute of Social Sciences conducts international and multidisciplinary research programmes. There are 16 research centres at the Institute that undertake basic applied and developmental research projects in the social sciences that execute about 80 research projects annually, funded partly by the State and partly by contracts with national and international entities.

The Centre for Welfare Studies was founded in 1984, its first task being a longitudinal study of the quality of life in Slovenia. Since then, research has addressed social policy, welfare, social protection, civil society, non-profit organisations, quality of social services, housing policy, vulnerable groups, migration, and mobility, and most recently social inclusion and quality. In addition to basic theoretical research, it conducts policy oriented research and provides evaluations. It is represented in working groups of the Council of Europe and in the Co-ordination Committee of the European Network for Housing Research. Members of the Centre teach at the University of Ljubljana and participate in the European post-graduate programme in European Social Policy Analysis.
