Ecole des Hautes Etudes en sciences sociales (EHESS/CEMS-17)

Centre d'Etudes des Mouvements Sociaux, Paris, France

The Centre for the Study of Social Movements (CEMS) in Paris (France) addresses the transformations taking place in today’s society. As a generalist centre it contributes to transforming paradigms of sociology into action, systematically reflecting upon the understanding and putting into effect of non-determinant descriptions. By applying the philosophical concept of public space in the field of sociological research and introducing rare currents of sociology, such as inter-actionism or ethno-methodology, CEMS has come to play an important role in France.

CEMS pays attention to issues that are essential to social sciences and to new approaches, which allow for linking current perplexities of society with the conditions for collective action.  The collection of publications "Raisons pratiques" by Éditions de l’EHESS is a measure of support to which the CEMS provides both support and logistics.

In its work, CEMS addresses questions and issues that revolve around an axis of research on public space and collective action; experiences of social linkages; the disintegration of the wage-earning society and forms of social re-composition. It looks into the temporality of experience; new approaches to work and professional environments; sociology of the norms of social life and the incertitude of living together. Moreover, a transversal project on gender relations has been undertaken by both researchers and Ph. D students.
