Good Governance: the key to effective homelessness policies

The Hague, 19 September 2008. This important research conference is aimed at researchers in the area of homelessness, representatives from homeless organisations, policy makers and other interested parties.

Governance is an important focus of current research into homelessness. This conference will be a unique opportunity for transnational exchange and networking on the theme of governance.

The morning Plenary session will be chaired by Sineke ten Horn, the keynote speakers will be:

  • Prof. Dr. Judith Wolf,  UMC St Radboud, Nijmegen, Netherlands - Policies and Challenges in reducing Homelessness in the Netherlands
  • Prof. Denis Culhane (USA) - Overview of the Dynamics of Homelessness in the US
  • Bill Edgar, Coordinator European Observatory on Homelessness - Reflections on Homelessness Research in Europe

In the afternoon, delegates will be able to attend one of the four workshops (the following speakers have confirmed):

  • Effective strategies to combat homelessness arising from domestic violence
    • Gina Netto: “Effective housing interventions to address women facing domestic violence”
    •  Irene Jonker: “Effective interventions to address the problems of battered women or profiles of battered women who attend women’s shelters”
  • Participation of people who are homeless
    • Caroline Norman “Homelessness and the arts: the importance of culture and participation in governance, public policy and social research”
    • Jorgen Anker “Organizing homeless people: Exploring the emergence of a user organization in Denmark”
    • Robert Aldridge “Designing resources to facilitate participation of young homeless people”
  • Prevention of homelessness
    • Suzanne Fitzpatrick and Volker Busch-Geertsema “Effective Homelessness Prevention?: Explaining Reductions in Homelessness in Germany and England”
    • Dennis Culhane: “Experiences with homeless prevention strategies in the USA”
  • Role of public policy
    • Eoin O’Sullivan and Isabel Baptista “The Role of the State in Developing Effective Homeless Strategies”
    • Lars-Erik Olsson and Marie Nordfeldt “Homelessness and the tertiary welfare system in Sweden”
    • Carol McNaughton and Iain Atherton “Housing First: a review of experiences”
    • Lars Benjaminsen “The Effects of Housing Interventions for the Homeless: Targeting of interventions and selection effects"

Reception and Poster Session

Delegates are invited to a drinks reception at the end of the conference. At the same there will be a Poster Session - details will be available soon.

Fees & Accommodation

Day delegate fees include all conference materials, lunch, and refreshments.

Bookings which include an overnight stay also include dinner, accommodation and breakfast. Delegates will be staying at the IBIS hotel.

Day delegates can also book to attend the conference dinner on Friday, 19th September 2008.

Venue

The Conference will take place in the ZonMw building in the Hague, the Netherlands.

Directions

Travel to the Hague by rail or by air. There is a regular train service between Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and the Hague. There are flights to Schiphol from most European airports.
