The Department of Sociology at Vytautas Magnus University in Lithuania mainly undertakes education in Sociology from undergraduate to postgraduate levels, as well as theoretical and empirical research. The academic profile of the Department is interdisciplinary and it focuses mainly on cultural studies, social change, civil society, gender issues and communication studies. Since its foundation in 1990, it has attracted a number of international scholars as visiting lecturers and research fellows for collaboration on various academic and research projects. Its’ staff has successfully participated in various research and community-oriented projects. Professors and doctoral students of the department have published several monographs and a great number of academic articles in Lithuanian and foreign scholarly journals. In co-operation with Klaipeda University the Department publishes the academic journal Sociologija. Mintis ir veiksmas (Sociology: Thought and Action), which is the only journal in Lithuania devoted solely to the problems of sociology.

Aukse Balcytiene, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor and Head of Communication Studies at the Institute of Political Sciences and Diplomacy at Vytautas Magnus University (Lithuania). In recent years, she has written about the new political world in Lithuania, the transformation of media in post-communist societies, the media and democratisation, socio-cultural impacts of new media and journalism education.

Arnas Zdanevičius, Ph.D., is a lecturer and research fellow at the Department of Sociology of Vytautas Magnus University in Lithuania. His main research interests are social change, civil society, post-industrial and information society, sociology of deviance, biographical methods. He has been involved in coordination of a number of research and community oriented projects.

 Arnas Zdanevičius has in recent years co-authored publications about community oriented learning and non-governmental organisations and he has published articles on women’s career paths, public policy making and juvenile justice reform, and sociology of deviance.
